Works pretty well, but have noticed a couple quirks... which may be just config problems, rather than real system problems. First, When I have the Direct Mailbox Access option under the COS parameters turned on, a call that comes in on someone's extension and then gets transfered to the voice mail system will go Directly into the transfer-er's mailbox. Transfer-ee's can get themselves out by doing #6 and then *box#, but this is a pain in the ass. Next, Whats the commonly accepted plan for dropping calls into the Auto attendant or Voice mail if it goes unanswered? I currently have things setup such that most incoming calls do a DIL 1:N so that almost all of our phones ring... whoever is free can pickup. I've also got Intercept Routing, No Answer setup currently. If an incoming call goes three rings, it gets transfered over to the VPS. This takes care of incoming calls, but doesn't seem to work for intercom or transfered calls. I have a feeling that there's a number of different ways to skin the same cat here, but want to find out what other people suggest. Later. To: kxt@info.com Sender: owner-kxt@info.com Precedence: bulk After researching most of the switches on the market, I decided you just can't beat the 1232 for price/performance. However, it takes a big hit in the DID department...namely, it doesn't have any. OK...I'm a clever guy and have my Dialogic board handy to cope with the problem, but what is the best way to set it up? Will the 1232 pass through the MF signals, or am I going to have to put my IVR system on the CO side of the switch? Also, since it's apparent I have to keep my current system to deal with the DID issue, I'll have a hard time justifying the cash for a completely redundant TVS100 system (which really does nothing that my current voicemail system won't.) However, the TVS100 has some really spiffy proprietary features I'd like to use, and given the lack of CPC I've heard so much about, I'm becomming really disillusioned. Has anyone managed to reverse engineer the digital protocol used by these neat devices? Is there a commercially available board or software that I can buy which will allow my PC to simulate a TVS box? Thanks for any suggestions. I found the somewhat lengthy writeups in earlier editions of the KXT Digest to be quite useful, so I'll continue in that tradition. I'm going to focus on the problems I had; several other postings have done an excellent job of explaining what is right about it. I want to emphasize that I am, on the whole, very happy with it, and have grown happier with time. I also have a few questions that perhaps someone can answer. CONFIGURATION My configuration is a KX-TD 1232 with one Caller Id module. I have four CO lines coming in to it, with one extension looped back to another CO line as recommended by several people here. There are six DPTs, one APT (the KX-T 7880 900MHz wireless with three CO appearances), and about a dozen analog ports, including three answering machines, a modem, a FAX machine, etc. A couple of these are actually unconnected so that guests who don't have ethernet can plug in their laptops. I have no doorphones, external pagers, or other fancy features. Installation really is a breeze, as long as you remember that the -1 jack is pair 2 and the -2 jack is pair 1 (how embarrassing). I didn't scrimp here -- I found a closet with a large wall with plenty of room for punch blocks. I put in one punch block for the CO lines, two for the extension side of the switch, and three for the lines to the stations. If there is interest, I can describe my installation in more detail. CALLER ID The biggest problem with the Caller Id module was getting Pac Bell to enable CNID on the lines. First they told me that I couldn't get them on my lines (I have Commstar II service as well, and they are petitioning the CPUC to "freeze" the service: no changes, no how; but they haven't gotten permission to do that yet). Then they did enable it on one of the lines, but gave me the same story on the other lines. Then they said it was impossible on that switch, and I pointed them to the line that did work. After about three weeks they finally got it working on all lines. The programming is nice: you can program up to 250 number -> name mappings that are displayed on the display phones. However, the phones don't start ringing until the CO line has rung once (the CNID info is passed between the first and second rings). You have no indication that the line is ringing at all until the second ring. I find this a bit annoying; I would prefer that it provide ringing immediately and give me the data when it has it. Caller Id information is not delivered to a phone unless that phone is actually ringing. For example, I had the phone in my office set to not ring on the house line -- it isn't necessary because I can hear it ring in the other room. But then I don't get any Caller Id information. Again, just an annoyance -- it was easy to change the phone to ring on that line. You also don't get Caller Id information if the phone _would_ ring but you are off hook (e.g., on another line). This is more annoying. However, it can be made to work by setting Call Waiting. CALL WAITING Normally if another trunk rings while you are on the phone, the line appearance flashes but the phone does not ring and no Caller Id information is provided (making it difficult to decide if you want to pick up the new call). Call Waiting fixes this; this phone beeps a couple of times and Caller Id information is delivered. However, Call Waiting is individually programmable in each phone, and more importantly is considered a "station feature", much like Call Forwarding. This means that Station Feature Clear (790) will clear call waiting. You get a stutter dial tone. I don't want either of these -- as far as I'm concerned, Call Waiting should default on, at least for the phones with multiple appearances. (Note that Call Waiting on such a phone is far less offensive than what you get from the phone company.) I would be happy with a one-bit option (say in [990] System Additional Information) that would flip the sense of Call Waiting default. WIRELESS PHONE On the whole, this phone is great. The primary misfeature that I have noticed is that the line appearances don't indicate the state of the lines unless the phone is ringing or off-hook. LARGE DISPLAY PHONE The KX-T 7235 (six line display phone) is great for programming (although the PC is FAR better for programming any of the alphanumeric fields). However, I regret that it only has twelve flexible buttons. Using the menus to walk through the system speed dial is great for numbers you call semifrequently, but for frequent dialing it gets tedious -- I would like more buttons on the phone for this purpose. The Station Speed Dialing does give you ten numbers, which helps. If a half-width DSS console were available I would probably happily get that. (By the way, does anyone know why the DSS console can't have a single line phone paired with it?) The directory for System Speed Dial is great, but when I select a name I wish it would display the Auto Dial number; in some cases I want to memorize these things so that I can use them from the other phones. As it stands, I have to have a sheet of paper with the speed dial codes at each phone. Eventually I will have memorized the important ones, but this will be a slower process since at least half the time I'm using the 7235. My solution: I'm not using the directory to force myself to memorize the codes. Station Speed Dials are a big win. You get one screen with all the names; since they are specific to this phone, I don't care that I don't know the speed dial number. However, I do find that the space available in both the DSS buttons and the Station Speed Dial isn't long enough for many of my numbers (e.g., 83-10333-14085417616 to call my office -- it's two digits too long to fit). GENERAL GOTCHAS AND GRIPES I would _really_ like it if "dial 9" could be programmed to search trunk groups in a different order on each extension. The order can be changed, but only on a per-system basis. For example, I would like "9" on the FAX machine to pick up the FAX line; instead, I have to dial "84" for this. I could restrict that extension from picking up anything but CO4, but sometimes it is nice to use another line, particularly if the lines are billed differently. Of course, I could dial 88 to pick up the loopback extension, and then use 8x to get another line, but that is pretty cumbersome. The lack of CPC on extensions means that my answering machines take a lot more empty messages than they used to, and record a lot more dead air or dialtone after people hang up. I consider this to be a botch. For some reason, extensions continue to ring at least one full ring after the CO line has hung up. My assumption is that CPC isn't working on the CO lines. I've played with [405] CPC Signal Detection Incoming Set to no avail. If anyone has any suggestions.... I had assumed that if a phone had no CO appearance (Single, Group, or Loop) then a CO programmed to ring on that phone would appear on the Intercom. This is false -- the phone doesn't ring at all. Unfortunate, because it means I have to dedicate a button for the loopback line (or a Loop appearance) on each phone. It would be nice if the Station Speed Dial numbers were referenced using the System Speed Dial code followed by something like *. For example, a system speed dial (on a single line phone) would be something like "*00"; station speed dials would be "**0". As it is, I use ## to introduce system speed dial and #* to introduce station speed dial; I wanted * for External Feature Access since our Commstar service uses those a lot -- it's easier to remember "**9" than "6*9". Incoming calls that do not complete are not logged to the printer port. It would be nice if they did, particularly since the Caller Id information could be useful. QUESTIONS I still haven't figured out what the Paralleled Telephone feature is supposed to do for you. Anyone have any clues? Does anyone know what Flexible Feature Number 54, "TAM Emur." do? The default feature number is 799. When I dial this followed by six zeros my display phone shows "Password: 000"; if I dial 799000 again it shows "Password Cancel", so it seems clear that it's locking something. But what? SUMMARY I'm still in the process of learning to live with this phone switch, but so far I like it. Of course, I'm a gadget sort of guy, so that's not too surprising. I like this switch, although there are a few things I would do differently if I had access to the code. Big surprise. eric ***************************************************** * To post to the KX-T list, e-mail kxt@info.com * * To unsubscribe, e-mail kxt-request@info.com * ***************************************************** >From owner-kxt Tue Oct 22 09:52:15 1996 remote from denwa Return-Path: Received: by denwa.info.com (Smail3.1.29.1 #4) id m0vFk3q-0001SVa; Tue, 22 Oct 96 09:52 PDT Sender: owner-kxt@denwa.info.com From: "Carlos Delgado" Organization: PNUD. The kxt30810 sounds like it will let me do this, plus a bunch of other things I have not yet considered. Where can I buy a kxt30810 and how much should I expect to pay? Do I need to get at least one proprietary phone or can all of the programming be done from a PC? Thanks! To: kxt@info.com Sender: owner-kxt@info.com Precedence: bulk A few days ago I sent a query to all of you asking about ways to get DID into my new TD1232. Thanks to all who responded. It's true that Panasonic is supposed to have DID support in the near future, although it's also true that no one responded positively about when I'd actually be able to get it. The most realistic and recommended solution...Exacom 400 SFD cards placed in front of the switch to convert the wink start lines into analog lines with DTMF signals. These were fairly expensive (I paid $2600 for 8 trunks) however I've been guaranteed they'll work well. Now I have a few more questions for you expert Panasonic programmers: I have a 3rd party programmable IVR system on my switch, which will receive the DNIS digits from the phone company and rattle off the appropriate auto attendant menu based on where they called in from. In certain cases, I want the voicemail system to be able to transfer the call to a proprietary digital Panasonic phone, and have the necessary information to appear on the display. Recomendations on how to accomplish this? Is there a way to access the display directly? Should I try and set up ghost extensions for each valid DID line and have these extensions xfer to my phones? (Will it then roll back to voicemail if I don't answer?) I can do anything with the IVR system, down to writing special C/UNIX device drivers for boards if I have to. My concern is what are the limitations of the switch, and where do I find the necessary technical information to pull this off? On yet another note altogether, I seem to be delving into the switch to the point that I'd like to take the dealer training course for my own enjoyment and edification. Can someone provide me with the appropriate number to call for registration in the Southwest? (Southern California specifically) Thanks again for all your responses on the DID issue, and thanks in advance for any assistance with the above problems. Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-kxt@info.com Precedence: bulk Those of you that have read of our home system (www.ablecomm.com/advice.htm or in the Sept.96 Circuit cellar Ink, or in the KXT archives) know that I use a fax/modem switch to switch incoming calls on one CO line between a FAX machine, a remote access device, and a CO line input on our 123211D. Recently I decided to try to add Windows 95 dial-in networking to the mix. I didn't want to add another incoming line. Accessing the incoming modem extension through the remote access device is a possibility, but I'm not entirely sure I can develop a reliable modem dialing string to handle all of the switching and authentication. I thought I had the answer until I found out that Pac Bell doesn't offer distinctive ring (I was going to add a distinctive ring box to the incoming CO line, and switch on different ring to another CO input). Tonight, as I was showering, (why do thoughts happen like this in the shower?) I realized that the solution may be already in place, and easier than I could have thought. Our voicemail box allows extension dialing during outgoing message delivery. We don't mention that fact in our menus, to discourage button pushers. All I need to do is dial in, and during the message, dial the modem extension! Easy string to program, just put in enough pauses to ensure that the voicemail has answered. What I learned: The fax/modem switch was in place before the voicemail box, so it colored my way of thinking about managing my incoming lines. The voicemail box has modes that complement or supersede the older technology. I just couldn't see it. Now that I've figured it out, it might change how I use the fax and everything. (The voicemail box will apparently forward on fax tones...) The (sort of) sad part: Had Pac Bell offered distinctive ring, I would probably never have figured this out, and would be paying more $$ per month. For what it's worth...
